Far and Away

Ireland in the 1890s was full of rebelling farmers who were against their wealthy absentee landlords because they were in poverty and starving.

The United States in the 1890s were full of new immigrants from all over Europe looking to get jobs because the Industrial Revolution was well-underway. Although because of the boat loads of new immigrants, the United States needed to devise a way to let immigrants in without overcrowding their cities. Immigrants also began to get hired a lot more than Americans because they worked for longer hours and for less money.

Immigration into Boston, MA in the 1890s was very crowded.
Many immigrants were put to work on the railroad because they worked for less money.
In the movie "Far and Away," it portrays immigration and the Industrial Revolution in America. It shows immigration in America in the beginning when Shannon and Joseph were getting off of the boat, but also when people said they wouldn't hire Irish immigrants which is also discrimination.

It shows the Industrial Revolution when Shannon and Joseph were working in a place where they killed and plucked chicken. It also shows the Industrial Revolution when Joseph was working on the railroad.
