Thanksgiving and America

I am thankful for many things especially around this time of year when the environment begins to get colder and drier.

One thing I am especially thankful for is my family. They love and cherish me. They help me through everything and they're there for me through thick and thin.

My lovely family on the day of my brother's graduation (2014).

One thing I am thankful for about America is the freedom of speech we have. Most countries don't have what we have for freedom and I am very thankful I live in a country that does.

Election Day

Election day is determined to be the Tuesday after the first Monday in November and it cannot be on the 1st, it has to be on or between the 2nd and the 8th. The reason for this is because the 1st is All Saints' Day which is a Holy Day and also most merchants were in the habit of doing their books on the 1st. It is on a Tuesday because most residents of America had to travel long distances to vote and they did not want to mess up the Church services by making it on a Monday.

The states that election day is a civic holiday in Delaware, Hawaii, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, West Virginia, and the territory of Puerto Rico.

Far and Away

Ireland in the 1890s was full of rebelling farmers who were against their wealthy absentee landlords because they were in poverty and starving.

The United States in the 1890s were full of new immigrants from all over Europe looking to get jobs because the Industrial Revolution was well-underway. Although because of the boat loads of new immigrants, the United States needed to devise a way to let immigrants in without overcrowding their cities. Immigrants also began to get hired a lot more than Americans because they worked for longer hours and for less money.

Immigration into Boston, MA in the 1890s was very crowded.
Many immigrants were put to work on the railroad because they worked for less money.
In the movie "Far and Away," it portrays immigration and the Industrial Revolution in America. It shows immigration in America in the beginning when Shannon and Joseph were getting off of the boat, but also when people said they wouldn't hire Irish immigrants which is also discrimination.

It shows the Industrial Revolution when Shannon and Joseph were working in a place where they killed and plucked chicken. It also shows the Industrial Revolution when Joseph was working on the railroad.

Cities

Cities grew rapidly in the 19th century because of new inventions and advancements.

Some advancements included the modern vertical city, elevators, and mass production of steel.

Mass Production of Steel
There were also obstacles the Americans had to overcome. Some of these obstacles or challenges were building the Statue of Liberty, building skyscrapers, and gangsters and murderers were running the streets.

Building the Empire State Building

The world stopped spinning
as the towers fell.
So many lives lost
in what seemed like
a real Hell.
People remember the day
with tears in their eyes
although everybody still denies.
It has been years
of just pure silence.

Native American Portraits

Map of Wounded Knee, South Dakota

Sign at Wounded Knee
Wounded Knee was the town the massacre of over 250 Native Americans died at for their freedom.

Sitting Bull's Body, Days After the Massacre
Sitting Bull was one of the greatest Native American leaders. He cared for his tribe and wanted nothing bad to ever happened to them. He supported them and went to the Ghost Dance rituals to show how much he supported them. But then he grew seriously ill and allowed his followers to be taken to Wounded Knee to be unarmed. He was shot in the head in the middle of the massacre as he tried to get up to help his people once more.

A Lakota Ghost Dancing Shirt
The Ghost Dance was a dance done by the Native Americans who were trying to restore faith into their culture. The Ghost Dance was supposed to make all whites disappear, revive their ancestors, buffaloes would come back, and the parries would once again be filled with game. America banned the Ghost Dance because they feared it was a war dance.

Soldiers Pose with Hotchkiss Guns
Hotchkiss guns were used during the massacre because of the fear that the Native Americans were getting ready for war. They used these guns like cannons, destroying everything in their path. The soldiers killed not only men but women and children also. Soldiers were shooting everything and anything that moved.

Native American Name

Poison Apple

Apples are nice, sweet, beautiful, and smart. Although some are poisonous towards others or themselves. I am one of the pones that are poisonous towards herself, telling myself I will never amount to anything. I was given this name due to the differences between my physical self and my mental self. Examples of this would be constantly telling others they are worth it but being a hypocrite and telling myself I am not, or smiling on the outside but continuously sad on the inside.

Technology Then and Now

The railroads back in the 1870's have improved into subways that speed below cities with bustling crowds going in and out of their doors constantly. Railroads have also been replaced with cars, airplanes, motorized boats, and city buses. The telegraphs and telephones from the 1870's have improved into cellular devices that people of the modern day never put down. Modern cellular devices also include email, text messaging, and video calling.
