Beginnings of WWII

The following two photos show German aggression in Europe because in the first picture, it is preventing people from shopping at stores because some thought and/or knew it was owned by a Jew. In the second photo, it also shows aggression because it is giving Germany's people a lot of hope and trying to show strength to the countries around it.

In the following two photos, you witness Japanese aggression in Asia. In the first photo, you can see Japanese troops beating on China's citizens. In the second photo, you can easily see a Japanese plane dropping a bomb on China which is, of course, aggression.

The following map is a map of the world during WWII. It shows the different sides of the war.

Blue - Allies, Red - Axis, Orange - Officially neutral, but unofficially helped the Axis, Pink - Allies occupied by the Axis, Gray - The Vatican was the only true neutral.

Coping with The Great Depression

The Great Depression was between the years 1929 and 1939. It was one of America's worst tragedies where the stock market crashed and the economy sunk. Most Americans became poor and needed to sacrifice a lot of things.

1. Selling Jewelry and clothing to get money
2. Giving up the luxury of dental care and not being able to afford medicine
3. Moving from a good house to a little apartment
4. Only owning one pair of socks and drying them in the oven
5. Kids sleep together in the kitchen
6. Not paying bills which leads to electric and heat being shut off
7. Giving breakfast to the kids and rationing food
8. Not being able to pay for milk so they add water to milk
9. Sending children to relatives
10. Fighting while injured and covering injuries to get jobs

Obama asks Congress...

President Obama asked Congress to use military force against ISIL (the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) for three years. ISIL is located in the Levant which is in the Middle East. ISIL poses a threat to the Middle East and to America.

President Obama (and the next President) will report to Congress every six months for the duration of the war to discuss specific actions taken by the army.

Prohibition

Prohibition was a nationwide constitutional ban on the sale, production, importation, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. This lasted from 1920 to 1933. The effects this had on society were people began to unlawfully make, sell, and transport alcoholic beverages without registration or paying taxes. These people were called bootleggers. Also, speakeasies came into play. These were illicit liquor stores or nightclubs. Society fought against this amendment and rises of mass disobedience began. Although there was a decrease in arrests and hospitalization for alcoholism and instances of liver-related medical problems, those against the amendment fought it and this brought about the "flapper" and allowed women to drink cocktails, smoke, and dance to jazz.

The Literary Effects of War Horse

In the movie, War Horse, there are many literary effects that the producers used. They made sure the accents were believable from German soldiers to French grandfathers and granddaughters to English soldiers and townspeople. There was also a part in the movie when an English and a German soldier went to untangle Joey and they argued over who would receive the horse. Both sides called Joey a war horse.

The Dramatic Effects of War Horse

In the movie, War Horse, there are many dramatic effects that the producers used. Some dramatic effects they used were the settings that included the meadow, town, and battlefield. Also the costumes they used varied between horse-riding gear and army uniforms. Other dramatic effects they used were the way the characters talked because they had all different accents and they way the made their voice move from calm speaking to yelling.

USA and the Philippines

The USA gained control over the Philippines by inserting their army and navy into their ocean and ground. They kept control between the years 1895 and 1898.

The USA granted the Philippines independence in 1946 after 11 years of establishing approval and electing the first president.

The USA contributed to relief efforts after the typhoon by giving $87.5 million, evacuated over 21,000 people, including citizens of the Philippines, the United States, and many other foreign nationals, and deployed the United States Agency for International Development and Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance crisis response teams to oversee military operations, and coordinate the US government response with the government of the Philippines.

Spanish-American War Cartoons

The Spanish-American War began in February 1895 and ended December 10, 1898 because of the Treaty of Paris. The results were in favor of the Americans. Propaganda is information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view. Yellow journalism is journalism that is based upon sensationalism and crude exaggeration.

Muckrakers

The Progressive Era is a social activism and political reform group.
A muckraker is a reform minded journalist who exposed misconduct.

Upton Sinclair (1878-1968)

Upton Sinclair focused in the meatpacking industry and wrote a book called The Jungle which exposed the unsanitary conditions of the industry.

Rachel Carson (1907-1964)

Rachel Carson focused on the use of pesticides and released a book called Silent Spring which uncovered exactly how pesticides were harming the environment.

Seymour Hersh (1937-present)

Seymour Hersh focused on the many different parts of the government including the CIA and the army. He wrote for The New Yorker and revealed the government's mischief.

Bob Woodward (1943-present) and Carl Bernstien (1944-present)

These two young men, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstien, worked together to exposed the corrupt government. They both wrote for The Washington Post.

Julian Assange (1971-present)

Julian Assange focused on "racial transparency" and founded a website called Wikileaks which allows "whistleblowers" to anonymously share classified documents,

Thanksgiving and America

I am thankful for many things especially around this time of year when the environment begins to get colder and drier.

One thing I am especially thankful for is my family. They love and cherish me. They help me through everything and they're there for me through thick and thin.
